Bertie explained Ragged Ice was an unsigned rap act, two brothers from Jersey named Jimmy and Frankie Bullhorn who figured they were the next Vanilla Ice times two, but with more attitude. When they auditioned for the vice president of Scar Tissue Records they were immediately rejected as being terrible. Bertie explained when they received the bad news they hadn’t taken it well and security had to physically removed them from the building. After repeated threats, and a suspicious package from them were delivered to the record company offices, the New Jersey State Police visited the two Bullhorn brothers. The cops warned them not to contact the record company again.

This would have been the end until three days ago when Bertie’s aunt was kidnapped. He was instructed to tell the company vice-president to arrange for a demo record, or else. If he refused or went to the cops his aunt would be murdered.

The only person he’d told about any of this (other than I assume the vice president and Laverne) was his Aunt Beatrice and she told him to contact Razor and Edge.

“Who came up with the test?” I asked.

A small smile came over Bertie’s thin lips and travelled to his eyes as he gazed with affection into Laverne’s emerald eyes. “Why Laverne, of course. She’s a smart one. Believe me,” he said with evident pride in his voice.

Laverne who’d been silent until now squeaked with delight like a demented mouse. (I winced). “Thanks, darlin’.” She bent toward him and kissed his cheek.

His pale face turned a bright crimson. He cleared his throat then said, “It's true, sweetie.”

His eyes shifted to look at me. “L and I are going to be married soon,” he explained.

“I’m happy for you,” I replied and I meant it. They were made for each other.

“But about the business at hand,” I said changing the subject back to his kidnapped aunt. “I gather you don’t plan on giving into the kidnappers demands.”

“Oh, no Razor. I plan to hand them a fully executed contract for one demo record. I have to save my aunt.”

Now he’d lost me. “Then, Bertie,” I began, “I don’t understand why you need us?”

He looked me straight in the eye and the carefree dope-in-love demeanor had disappeared. The sparkle in his eyes had been replaced by a grim, yet determined look that shook me to my toes. I’d never thought of accountants as the super villain types, but Bertie could be part of a new breed.

“I agreed to use your office as the meeting point to make the exchange. Neutral ground as it were,” Bertie explained.
